Visual Communication students redesign the city’s bus signs

A studio project with the city transport office goes on the streets this autumn.

A bus stop sign on a city street

Last spring, fourteen students in the Visual Communication master spent a semester riding buses. They photographed every stop on two city lines, timed how long it took to read each sign, and asked passengers what they could not find.

Their redesign keeps the city’s colours but changes almost everything else: larger stop names, departure times set in figures that stay clear at a distance, and a simple map of the next five stops. The type comes out of our research on public signs, tested on screens and in poor light.

The transport office liked the work enough to try it. From October, the new signs replace the old ones along line 30, and passengers can leave feedback with a code on each sign. If it works, the rest of the network follows next year.
