Four steps, one application

Choose a programme
Browse 86 programmes across four faculties and check the entry requirements for your level.
- 02
Prepare your documents
Transcripts, a CV, a portfolio for design and architecture, and proof of English at B2 or above.
- 03
Apply online
One application covers up to two programmes. Submit before 15 January for an early decision.
- 04
Hear back
Faculties review every application by hand. Decisions go out within eight weeks of the deadline.

Excellence scholarship
CHF 10,000 a year for outstanding master's applicants, awarded on the application itself.
Need-based grant
Covers tuition and part of living costs for students with limited means, reviewed every year.
Studio fund
Up to CHF 2,000 a year towards materials, printing and travel for studio programmes.
(03) Requirements
What you need
Bachelor
- Swiss Matura or an equivalent school-leaving certificate
- English at B2, or German at B2 for German-taught programmes
- A portfolio for design and architecture programmes
Master
- A bachelor's degree in a related field
- English at C1
- A statement of intent of about 800 words
- Two academic references
Doctorate
- A master's degree in a related field
- A research proposal agreed with a supervisor
- An interview with the faculty
(04) Questions
Good to know
(01) Can I apply to more than one programme?
Yes. One application covers up to two programmes, ranked by preference.
(02) Do I need to speak German?
No. Most master's programmes are taught in English; bachelor's programmes mix German and English. Each programme page lists its language.
(03) When do I hear back?
Within eight weeks of the deadline you applied to. Early applicants hear back by mid-March.
(04) Can I defer my place?
Yes, once, for up to a year. Write to admissions before 1 July.
(05) Is there housing for new students?
Yes. First-year students from outside Basel get priority for student housing. Applications open when you accept your place.
