Residents put up 400 sensors this summer

In June we asked residents on the three streets of the Cooler streets project to help us measure the heat. By the end of July, 120 households had put up 400 small sensors on balconies, lampposts and window sills.

Each sensor records the temperature every five minutes and sends it to an open dashboard that anyone can check. The first results are already clear: on a sunny afternoon, the street with young trees stays up to four degrees cooler than the one without.

The sensors stay up until the end of September. Over the winter we will compare the data with the street changes planned for next year, and publish everything, including the code for the sensors, so that other neighbourhoods can build their own.
